Topsham

Topsham is just a short distance from Exeter. The town, which was first documented as a Roman settlement was given a Charter as a town on the 22nd August 1300 by King Edward the 1st. The town still has many fine examples from it's maritime past with Georgian and Edwardian architecture. The town, back in it's prime, was a thriving maritime port and ship building center that rivalled London. The ship building still continues with a shipworks still operating in the town but the port operations have now calmed down with mainly private boat owners using the town.

There are lots of places to eat and drink in Topsham and it is advised to divert from the route to explore further before rejoining the Exe Estuary Trail towards Dawlish or Exmouth.
